When will there be an end to the plight of minorities in Bangladesh?

- Chandan Kumar Sarkar

Introduction:

The British introduced the system of legislative assembly in 1936 in the undivided India where east Bengal was province of the nation. Upon the division of India in 1947, the system was poorly practiced in Pakistan where the present country of Bangladesh was a province in the name of East Pakistan. Despite ill election, the election of 1970 in Pakistan paved the way for an obvious emergence of Bangladesh replacing the province of the then East Pakistan. The parliamentary form of government through national election was constitutionally accepted in the newly born country; however, the practice was interrupted due to imposing martial law for more than once at different regimes. The mass movement in 1990 was a breakthrough for reviving a real parliamentary form of government through election under a neutral caretaker government.

In spite of back and forth, several elections took place to form the legislative assembly in this part of Bangladesh form 1954 to 2013. Religious Minorities in East Pakistan during Pakistani regime and in present Bangladesh played crucial role in these elections as determinant factors over the years. Also there had been minority representatives in the legislative assembly in different numbers at different times.

On the day of division of India in Mid August 1947, there was around 42 million populations of whom 29.5% were counted as to around 12.5 million minorities in the eastern part of Pakistan. Here Hindu are the majority with around 99% among the minorities and rest of them are Buddhists and Christians. However, number of minorities in this part started decline rapidly since then due to 2- nation theory. Because Pakistan was meant for Muslims, thus Minorities (mainly Hindus) had to leave this country. During the whole Pakistan period from 1947 to 1971, there was tremendous migration of minority populations from Bangladesh to India.

There was a pause only upon the independence of Bangladesh from 1972 to mid 1975 while on the main pillars of state policy was secularism. The Migration process again got momentum due to thrown out of secular characteristics’ of the country after 1975. The table below showing percentage distribution of population by religious communities in Bangladesh depicts how minority populations declined here over the years.

It is assumed in the meanwhile that the number of minority populations has further decreed upon election in Oct 2001. There are specific causes of declining minority populations form Bangladesh, especially since 1947 till date.

This indicates that the minority populations in the geographical boundary of Bangladesh have been declined more that in increased to 2001, whereas the total population of the country has been increased by 300% during this period.

If calculated, for the same period, statistically it is found that only the Muslim population has increased here by 400%. If it is taken as a normal population growth rate, while minority population could be more than 64 million in Bangladesh, provided all of them stayed here, however the number is approximately 15 million at present.

Where have these 50 million minorities gone?
Yes, most of them have migrated to India, are migrating to India every day, will be migrating to India, If the condition is not improved in Bangladesh. In addition, few of them are migrating to other countries for the world, while also few of them are forcibly converted to Muslims.

However, despite their declining in number, the size of minority populations in Bangladesh still stands around 15 millions, which are more than each of 175 individual countries out of 236 of the world.

Present Situation for the religious Minority of Bangladesh:
Today the situation is the same for the Bangladeshi Hindu people. We have constitution and it’s clearly mentioned that 28 no articles clause – 01, ‘The state is not take any discriminate for the religious, types, sex, gender, birth etc and none can discriminate for anyone’. According to the constitution none can in secured but it is burnt reality, what is going on here in Bangladesh in the name of Islam? The answer is reflected everywhere and it was clear after the 1975 to 2006. Each post and after the election, the religious minority is affected.

After the killing of the Father of Nation Bango Bandhhu Sheikh Majibur Rahman the word secularism were in deep to the soil and one fundamental groups always taking in advantages for the killing of minority and cleaning of minority from their homeland of Bangladesh. It is not only for the one fundamental group but also the state also keeps in the favor of them to do the same for the benefit for their own. From the 1986 to 1990 the tree of the fundamentalism is raising in each and everywhere in Bangladesh and the state support for this intentionally. From there the religious minorities are affected and the forcefully converted, raped their women, grabbed their land, properties, and sometime forcefully do to leave this country to India as a refugee. The religious minorities are 2nd class citizen in their own motherland of Bangladesh. From 2001 each and everyday on an average 600 Hindu minority are forcefully leaving from Bangladesh. The table shows the Hindus are declining from the Bangladesh from 1941 to 2011.

After the national election 2001, 2nd Oct to 30 October more or less each and every district of Bangladesh the minorities are affected. Barisal, Bhabarhat, Fani, Chittagong, Pabna, Rajshahi, Patuakhali, Nator, Bhola, Gazipur, Kishorgonj and Jinaidhah were the extreme where the Hindus were decline too much.
The fundamentalists affect every village in this area and one can see how terrific bloodshed is going over there in the name of Islam. Over there 5 years, girls to 75 years old female are not exempted from their brutality.

The Fundamentalists have three ambitions:

  1. Play with blood of Hindus
  2. They rape the Hindus female
  3. Forcefully raped and do to leave this country that they can captured their home, grab land and other belongings.

But the people are not raising their voice they keep quite. We always talking about the Palestine, yes you hate what is going on over there but we are not seeing anything what is going inside our home, how the religious minorities are affected we are not recognize this. It is burnt reality that we are the Bangladeshi Hindus those who born here in Bangladesh may be we have a sin that why we are born here.

If we consider how many Islamic fundamentalists are in Bangladesh maximum 5 million. Those who are giving the religious fatwa and try to weak to the Hindus and one politician is trying to suppress them to raise the religious toast. If the people are not coming forward if the nice politicians are coming to the front this will happens one after another. The following table shows the recent attack on the Hindus temple in Bangladesh.

Each and everyday the religious minority affected and that the published in the daily newspaper. 28 February 2013 the fundamentalist leader and the independent war criminal Mr. Delwar Hossain verdict gave death penalties in the Dhaka court but on that day the fundamentalists groups destroy 110 Mondirs, 182 Hindus family houses and brutally mercilessly tortured 34 people, 4 people had been killed and 11 female were raped. Kador Molla’s verdict came death sentence in Dhaka 3rd November 2013 but 16 November -2013 Bonogram and Nomopara in Jossore were affected by the fundamentalists. But what was the Hindu’s fault, only one fault that they were religious Minority Hindus.

Common scenario of Minority Killing in Bangladesh:

How the brutally they killed Deb Nath family, describe a boat man who hired for the the killing -- Boat man telling-

‘I had my boat docked at the Nadirabad village. It was in the middle of the night, around 1 am. All of a sudden, I saw a group of 15-20 people force Mrs. Birajbala and her five children into my boat. They were scared to death. They couldn’t even cry. The Kidnappers asked me to row the boat. The boat arrived at the Dhopajhhuri Bill. Birajbala was begging repeatedly by clutching the legs of the killers. The killers then cut her into pieces and after than elder daughter and one after another. Bangladesh’s minorities and their cultures will follow either the path of Mrs. Birajbala or millions of refugees in India.

I want to Justice, I want justice. Crying...........

Suggestions and recommendation:
To protect their rights and legal protection we are going to establish a common platform with the help of state and internationally that helps to the Hindus, make the young defenders, and raise the voice for their legal rights to stay with dignity in Bangladesh.

Initially, if you consider the public and private university and college level increase the awareness building and make young defenders and trained to them and provide training facilities and teach them to raise their voice to pretest the inhuman activities and it is their morale duty to do something for the people. The very beginning the three division level has to be priority level because over there the religious minorities are affected too much like Khulna, Satkhira and Barisal.

Where the Hindus are affected too much more or less each day is problem occurring there. So, if we provide information and training for the young defenders then killing and cleaning minority will reduce gradually.

Conclusion:
Today, the violence and discrimination against minorities, especially Hindus by the Muslim community in Bangladesh has increased tremendously. Different the sources of the news and media published the news that the rate of violence and raped and tortured has been increased and that is alarming for the overall Bangladesh and as well as Hindu community of Bangladesh. Physical tortured, forcefully conversion, raped and religious discrimination now is common in everywhere in Bangladesh. Without the precaution or take, any necessary step then within a very short period of time there is no more Hindus in Bangladesh. Lastly, I would like to inform with the famous quotation of Martin Luther king Jr ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’.
