A point where leftist-Islamist meets

Amitabh Tripathi

One weeks back when a regional party from the most populated Indian state called Uttar Pradesh which is known as Dalit party in India Bahujan Samaj Party cried against nuclear deal between India and Pakistan as anti Muslim in its nature very few people in India were ready to buy this argument but very soon there was a communal polarization on this issue. Few prominent Muslim clerics and representatives from various Islamic groups met to chief minister of Uttar Pradesh supremo of dalit party BSP. In meeting with Ms Mayawati chief minister of UP all Muslim praised her for her stand on nuclear deal to withdraw support from Congress led coalition in centre. Mayawati as a shrewd politician anticipated the crisis on this very issue of nuclear deal and withdrawn her outside support from coalition government which was at that time was under threat of Left parties. Nuclear deal with America from Indian government was always a contentious issue for congress led coalition which was relying heavily on left parties. For last one year Left parties in India were threatening congress against advancement of deal but when finally Indian government decided to go to IAEA board left got furious but first withdrawal of support came from a regional party whose rival party in the most populated state Uttar Pradesh Samajwadi Party or SP is identified as pro Muslim party in state and in this hour of crisis this party decided to go with Congress led coalition and it was the time when BSP raised the issue of anti Muslim character of nuclear deal. In large number of analysts and media people were not serious about involvement of religion in this deal and most of these people took these statements as political stunt but very soon this issue become serious and those groups which met with chief minister of Uttar Pradesh to praise her stand on nuclear deal gathered in national capital New Delhi to condemn this deal. Very soon after meeting to Mayawati they assembled in New Delhi and seminar was held there on this issue only although their voice was not colored with religion but their collective voice have some inherent message of Ummah and which was based on Anti -Americanism.

All the prominent Muslim speakers were of the view that this deal is a clear signal from Indian government about strategic alliance with America and Israel. This stand was vindicated later by several clerics also. Although some prominent Islamic seminaries denied involvement of religion in this deal and they also said it uncalled for to protest this deal in the name of Islam but there were always some space to interpreted it as an indication of beginning of strategic alliance between India and America.

In present political scenario left parties has withdrawn support from congress led coalition at the centre and central government has been asked to prove its majority in house to get the confidence of parliament till 22nd of July 2008. Government could not initiate further on deal without proving its majority in house but in this political turmoil what has created curiosity for everyone is polarization of various political groups in the name of nuclear deal. Samajwadi Party which has extend its support to congress led coalition is under fear of rebel in her party on the issue of nuclear deal and all the member of parliaments who have rebelled against party are

Muslims and they are not ready to support the deal and their objection is involvement of America in this deal which ultimately culminates in strategic alliance with a state which in their eyes is the biggest enemy of Islam.

This issue is more important for India because under current is going on in the country which polarize nation on communal ground. There are several groups in India which support this deal because of involvement of America in this deal and in their view American president George W Bush has initiated a war on terror which in some way is war against Islam and that's the reason why he should be supported. Major opposition party in India BJP has taken its own stand against deal because of some of its provisions but various Hindu formations within BJP are not agree with party stand although they are not ready to defy their bosses publicly.

Present political turmoil in India has very short life but the manner in which Left and Islamists have developed an anti America syndrome in last few years has few implications for nation. It is very strange coalition as Islamists struggle for religious world order as well world order based on Shariah at the same time Leftists are atheists but they have a point where both meet and that point is anti- America and anti- Zionism. This is not the first time in India when Left and Islamists have come close to each other four years back in assembly elections of one of southern states of India called Kearal which is one of states where leftist grab power some time leftists used Islamist appeal for electoral gains. Their campaign was based on Israel-Palestine conflict using the poster of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat paying him tribute. This trick was successful in electoral terms and leftists came in power. When Indian government voted against Iran in IAEA left got furious and massive rallies were organized with various Islamist groups to condemn the decision of government. Same thing was happened again when president of US George W Bush visited India huge rallies were organized in various cities and states to protest his visit. Even in Mumbai more than 6 lakh Muslims came out on street to demonstrate against president of US. All these rallies were performed under joint banner of Leftist and Islamists. These demonstrations have so much impact on government that it was forced to change the venue of president's address to parliamentarians from parliament to somewhere else in capital.

On the one hand Leftist and Islamist have come closer on anti-American and anti-Zionism plank but the other hand Indian people are totally divided on this issue and majority of Hindus support any initiative from government to go close to America or Israel. We have two examples before us. www.worldpublicopinion.org done two surveys on the issue of popularity of American president George W Bush and on the issue of Israel-Palestine conflict. On the issue of popularity of American president India was the only country where George W Bush was more popular it was 45% and only Nigeria was the other country where his figure has more than India, but in other countries he was termed as the most unreliable fellow. The other poll which was conducted on the issue of Israel-Palestine also has surprising results. In this survey people from various countries were asked whose side your government should take in Israel -Palestine conflict Israel or Palestine. In India 24 % people were of the view that government should take side of Israel and 23% were of the view that government should go with Palestine. Website has quoted this result as divided opinion. This division shows that Indian people are sharply divided on foreign policy issue with communal overview.

This division has some implications for India which also indicates that leftist Islamist alliance is getting momentum in India as well as undercurrent is also building against this coalition.

In month of June a prominent Indian English news paper published a story how in southern state of Kerala Maoists and Islamists hold a meeting and declared three common enemies against whom they will fight together. According to this coalition the common enemy is State terrorism, Imperialism (read it America) and Hindu forces. Leftist Islamist alliance is taking operational form which was in existence at ideological level from a long time and south Asia in very fast develops as hub for these forces. As Dr Richard Benkin has predicted Red-Green alliance is shaping in real form.
