Dear Senator _________________.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will soon take up the nomination of Peter D. Haas to be Ambassador to Bangladesh. I support that and wish Mr. Haas well. During his confirmation hearings, it is imperative that you raise the issue of Bangladesh’s ethnic cleansing of Hindus.

Hindus have gone from one in five to one in 15 since Bangladesh’s birth, and there has been an unbroken record of human rights abuses targeting them during this time. It’s still happening, and Bangladesh even used this pandemic as cover for this—enforcing social distancing except when it involved attacks on Hindus, including murder, rape, child abduction, and more, including anti-Hindu pogroms.

One of Bangladesh’s foremost scholars, Dhaka University’s Professor Abul Barkat, has said that if things don’t change Hindus will be eliminated in Bangladesh before mid-century.

The United States is a force for justice and a voice for the voiceless. Our ambassador must let the Bangladeshi government know that the American people, including those who buy their garments, do not want trade agreements and such with governments that engage in such horrors.

Thank you.
